ACT ONE

1 Have you heard, beyond the woods,
the voice in the night singing of love's sorrow?

2 Or the simple, plaintive sound of the pipe,
at dawn, when the fields were silent?

3 Have you heard?
4 Have you heard the simple plaintive
sound of the pipe?
6,1,1
5 Have you heard? 6,2,2
6 They're singing. I too used to sing
in those years long past, do you remember?

7 -You were young then.
-How I loved Richardson! Not that I'd read him...

8 ...but in the old days the Princess Alina,
my Moscow cousin, carried on about him.

9 Yes, I remember. Your husband was then
your fiancé, and you were a bit unwilling.
8,2,2
10 You were dreaming of another, whose heart
and mind pleased you much more.
9,1,2
11 -He was so dashing, and a sergeant
in the Guards. -So many years ago!
10,1,1
12 -I always dressed so well.
-In the latest fashion, and very becoming.
10,2,2
13 -Then, suddenly... -They married you off without
further ado, and moved you here to the country.
11,1,1
14 How I cried at first!
I almost left my husband.
11,2,2
15 -Then I was busy running a house,
and I got used to it, and was content. -Thank God!
12,1,2
16 Heaven grants us habit
in exchange for happiness.
13,1,1
17 Yes, that's how it is!
Habit takes the place of happiness.
13,2,1 1/2
18 Clothes, novels, Princess Alina, my notebook
of sentimental verse, I forgot them all.
