A Feast of Finzi

Dear Opera Fan,

As we welcome the holiday season, I wanted to let you know about the many operatic and concert activities coming up this month.

On Saturday evening, December 12th, St. Pius X Church in Rodgers Forge again offers a FREE holiday choral concert. A Feast of Finzi, featuring the Johns Hopkins Chorale (Mark Hardy, conductor) with soloists Ah Young Hong (soprano), Brian Chu (baritone), John Weber (tenor) and Michael Sheppard (pianist). The concert starts at 7pm and will be held at St. Pius Catholic Church in Rodgers Forge (6428 York Road, 21212).

On Sunday afternoon, First Church of Christ, Scientist and Lyric Opera Baltimore present a program of Favorite Opera Arias & Christmas Songs with James Harp and Friends. It features Jessica Hanel Satava (soprano) and Adam Caughey(tenor) and will be accompanied by James Harp on the paino and William Griggsby on the organ. This event is also FREE and open to the public. It begins at 5pm at First Church of Christ, Scientist at
102 W. University Parkway (across from JHU athletic field).

If you're in the mood for something lighter, The Celtic Tenors come to the Hilton Pikesville on Wednesday, December 12th at 7:30pm for their holiday show. If you've never heard of this trio, you can find out more at www.celtic-tenors.com. Tickets to their Baltimore premiere cost $30 and can be purchased online or by calling 800-838-3006.

And last but not least, The Handel Choir of Baltimore continues their holiday tradition (since 1935) of presenting Handel's Messiah. Two performances will be offered: Saturday, December 15th at 8pm at Baltimore's St. Ignatius Church; and Sunday, December 16th at 3pm at Towson Presbyterian Church. More details and tickets can be purchased at www.handelchoir.org.

I had the pleasure of attending a performance of Baltimore Concert Opera's Tosca over the weekend. Both performances were sold out in advance and it is a delight to see this company, now in its fourth season, adding so much to the culture of Baltimore. I highly recommend procuring your tickets for their Spring performances of Macbeth and Carmen now (they make great holiday gifts as well)!
